Components of owner’s equity, accumulated other comprehensive income and statement

Contributed Capital
The total amount received from the issuance of common stock and preferred stock, i.e. par value of preferred and common stock (also known as “stated” or “legal” value) plus the additional paid-in capital (the amount paid in excess of par value)

Minority interest (noncontrolling interest)
Pro-rata share of the nest assets (equity) of a consolidated subsidiary that is not wholly owned by the parent

Retained earning

The undistributed earnings (net icome) since inception

Treasury stock
· Stocks reacquired but not yet retired
· Treasury stock reduces stockholders’ equity
· Not represent an investment in the firm
· No voting rights
· Not receive dividend

Accumulated other comprehensive income
· Include all changes in stockholder’s equity except transactions recognized in the income statement, transactions with shareholders such as issuing stocks, reacquiring stocks and paying dividends.
· Under US GAAP, firms can report comprehensive income in the income statement below net income, in a separate statement of comprehensive income or in the statement of changes in stockholder’s equity.
· Under IFRS, not required to report comprehensive income

Statement of changes in stockholder’s equity
· Summarize all transactions that increase or decrease the equity account for the period
· transaction with shareholders (e.g. issuance or repurchase of stock)
· reconciliation of the beginning and ending balances of each eqyity account
· components of accumulated other comprehensive income (e.g. unrealized gains or losses from available for sale securities, cash flow hedging derivatives, foreign currency translation, adjustments for minimum pension liability)
