Descriptive statistics vs. Inferential statistics

Descriptive statistics
Describe important characteristics of large data set, either be a representation of the entire population or a sample. The measures are used to describe the central tendency and variability or dispersion of the data set.

Measures of central tendency include the mean, median and mode and measures of variability include the standard deviation (or variance), the minimum and maximum variables, kurtosis and skewness.

Inferential statistics
Inferential statistic is used to test some hypothesis and make forecasts, estimates, or judgments about a large set of data (population) on the basis of the statistical characteristics of a smaller set (sample); Sample is a subset of the population.
